Leather vs Textile Jackets

When it comes to motorcycle jackets, there are two main options: leather and textile. Both have their benefits, but how do you choose?

Investing in a quality jacket is investing in your life! Protect yourself, and you'll enjoy the ride for years to come.

We've put together our benefits of both leather and textile to help you make a decision!

What are the Benefits of Leather Motorcycle Jackets?

Leather motorcycle jackets has always been a popular choice among riders, and for good reason. Here are some of the benefits of choosing a leather jacket:

  • Durability: Leather jackets are known for their durability and can withstand the test of time. They are less likely to tear or rip over textile in an accident.
  • Protection: Leather provides excellent protection against abrasion and impact. It acts as a barrier between your skin and the road, reducing the risk of serious injuries.
  • Style: Leather jackets have a timeless appeal and give a classic, rugged look!

What are the Benefits of Textile Motorcycle Jackets?

Textile motorcycle jackets offer their own set of advantages. Here are some reasons why you might consider choosing a textile jacket:

  • Comfort: Textile jackets are generally lighter and more breathable. They are a great choice for riding in hot weather conditions.
  • Weather Resistance: Textile jackets often come with waterproof liners or water-resistant features, making them suitable for riding in the rain.
  • Versatility: Textile jackets are more flexible, offer more features and often include removable thermal/ waterproof liners.
  • Low maintenance - As opposed to leather, textile requires little to no maintenance. We would recommend a textile wash every now and then!

Safety Considerations:

No matter what type of jacket you choose, safety should always be a top priority!

Whether you opt for leather or textile, make sure to look for jackets that are AAA / CE2 certified and have adequate armour in key impact areas (shoulders and back).

Additional and replacement back protection are available for most key brands! Smaller, less well-known brands may be hard to find replacement inserts for.

Riding Frequency

Think about how often you ride. Your riding frequency will impact what jacket suits your needs best.

Are you a weekend warrior who only rides in their spare time?

Are you an everyday commuter who needs to consider it all - rain, wind,  and winter temperatures?

Leather jackets aren't the best for extreme weather (hot or cold)!

Some textile jackets can be considered all seasons - thanks to removable thermal liners and increased venting.

Budget Considerations:

It is important to note that any jacket, textile or leather, will be a long-term investment. Don't cheap out to suit your current budget.

Dririder and Ixon provide the best entry level options on the market - cheap, with awesome features!

Leather jackets tend to be more expensive, and require maintenance over time. Putoline Leather Wax or Richa Leather Grease are designed to keep your leather looking better for longer.

Entry level textile jackets while cheaper, may not last as long as a Leather Jacket.

Which One Should You Choose?

Personal preference plays a big factor! Figure out what features you value the most in your gear, your budget and go from there.

Style? Team Leather

Venting? Team Textile

If you're looking for an easy-wearing, timeless protective style, leather is best. Leather offers the versatility to ride the highways, and stop in the pub without looking out of place.

If you're looking for versatility, and more budget friendly options, we would recommend textile. Textile offers more comfort than leather, thanks to a majority of brands adopting the stretch comfort panel!

Ask yourself " will I find this comfortable after an hour of riding?" Sit on your bike in a riding position to gain an accurate sense of how the jacket will feel!

Final Thoughts:

There is no correct answer here! The perfect jacket for you is the one that meets all your needs, and can provide you with the best protection! Whether you choose Leather or Textile, it's your decision!

Do your research, stay on two wheels.

Happy riding ⚡
