Oakley is best-known these days around the world for their sunglasses. But do you know where they started?
The topic of today’s article is the origin story of Oakley. Beginning in a humble Californian garage, founder James Jannard started exclusively selling Oakley as motocross gear. Oakley's first product The Oakley Grip (seen below) was a one of a kind in the 70’s. It was engineered to “grip as it grips you”. Ironically, the grip that grips back was notorious for getting in the riders way.

The octopus tread made them easily recognisable as Oakley - that’s one way to remember a brand name!
After the success of multiple Motocross grips, Oakley began to sell gloves, goggles, straps, elbow guards etc., all specifically for the MX community.
The 1980’s brought the creation of the O-Frame, a standard frame with a large Oakley branded strap. The O-Frame instantly became recognisable and helped to create the Oakley revolution.

Oakley's first pair of sunglasses came in the 80’s: a sports themed pair designed for athletes/ sports lovers. The Oakley Eyeshade sunglasses were popularized by cyclists in road competitions.

The 1990’s were a turning point for Oakley sunglasses, with the production of the now iconic M-frames, along with others such as the Eye Jacket, and the X-Metal Romeo.

Oakley turned to extensive athlete promotion in the 90's, leading to the creation of the now iconic Michael Jordan ad. Fun fact, this piece was shot by Jannard himself!

Today, Oakley still utilizes sports endorsement and sponsorship within many sporting communities. Jalen Parks (seen below) is the latest addition to the Oakley family.

Oakley continues to innovate and elevate their designs each year. This includes prescription glasses to the pandemic appropriate MSK3 mask.
